I know when travelling to the USA you must have a 10 year passport but what about children? I have renewed their passports this year and they are only 5 year passports can we still gain entry into the country.
Will we need visas as well although they are machine readable.

I believe you can only get 5 year passports for kids, this is because their appearance changes so much. As far as I am aware these are fine as long as they are machine readable.

My children both had 5 year passports when we visited Florida in Nov 2003 and we didn't have any problems.

My son has a 5 year passport which has 9 months left on it. Does the fact that he turned 16 during the period of this passport mean he has to purchase a new 10 year one, or will he be Ok to travel to the USA using the existing one.

I believe you need to have at least six months on your passport to travel to the USA, so with nine months left you have nothing to worry about.
The fact that he is now sixteen does not matter.
If you feel the need to get him a new 10 year passport before you travel (if you have time), as far as I know the passport office will include up to a max of nine months on the new passport if the one you are renewing has not yet expired.
