Its always worth a try.

I tried in Aug 03 from Manchester but the Flight was full.( with virgin)

I tried again in Jul 04 going to California with United, but was told upgrades start at £500

Scheduled services are hard to get an upgrade mainly due to the flight being fully booked.

Charter services in to Sandford, upgrades at the airport cost about £30-50 ( this was in 2001 with Air2000) we never took up the offer wasnt worth it - the seats were not that bigger and there was no free extras.

We upgraded to Premium Economy when we flew with Virgin from Manchester to Orlando last Feb & have done it again when we go later this month.

When we went last year they were trying to bump people onto the Delta flight (going via Atlanta) as our flight was full. We didn't do it but the offer included and upgrade to business class and cash in hand so if you're prepared to perhaps take a later flight or go via another airport then it would be worth your while.

PS It is worth upgrading as you get seated first on the plane and get off first at the other end. We got larger seats, a better service and a separate carousel for our luggage when we arrived in Orlando. It meant that we were through immigration and out of the airport much faster than those in economy and we had had a more restful journey to boot!!!! You also get a separate check-in desk and if you're lucky a free invitation to the executive lounge at the airport - it's really down to how much value you place on these extras as to whether or not you think it's worth it, but we really did.
