Cedar Point Announces 17th Roller Coaster

SANDUSKY, Ohio (Cedar Point Press Relese) – Cedar Point will take guests to a new frontier in 2007. The historic amusement park/resort has announced plans for a new roller coaster for next summer named Maverick. Located in Frontiertown, Maverick will treat riders to multiple terrain-hugging elements that have never been experienced on a Cedar Point roller coaster. Guests will begin their journey on Maverick by boarding steam-era-styled coaster trains with an ultra-sleek profile that will carry them along the 4,450-foot-long course. Linear synchronous motors will propel the train to the top of a 105-foot-tall first hill. From there, it's not straight down – it's more than straight down. Maverick will take its passengers down to Earth at a 95-degree angle at speeds of up to 57 mph. From there, the train will hug the terrain as it twists and banks around hairpin turns with quick but smooth changes in direction. Throughout the 2-minute, 30-second ride, passengers will also experience eight "airtime-filled hills," three inversions and a second launch through a dark tunnel as they reach speeds of 70 mph. Situated on 5.5 acres between the Mean Streak roller coaster and Thunder Canyon water ride, Maverick will be Cedar Point's 17th coaster, more scream machines than any park in the world. Maverick will cost approximately $21 million to build, making it one of the single largest investments in the park's 137-year history.

Cedar Point has to be the Number One park for excellent coasters, hands down.

As soon as you walk into the park you cannot help but see The Raptor, which is similar in style and design as Orlando's Islands of Adventure's Dueling Dragons. The nearby Blue Streak used to be seriously thrilling, but now it's more like a kiddie ride; sort of a smaller version of Busch Gardens Tampa's Gwazi coaster.

Top Thrill Dragster is the newer coaster, but you almost can't call it a coaster. It's a launching system that shoots you from 0-120 in a heartbeat, shoots you straight up 400 fee, arcs over a small crest, the spirals you down 400 feet to a hair-raising, jaw-dropping finish. Whew!!! I watched from the stands as Simon rode it, as essential research on guest reaction (ok, I chickened out and he had to go alone! :D ).

The other serious crowd-puller is Millenium Force, which is higher than SheikRa, dropping you nearly straight down, then sending you zooming through a long, thrilling coaster experience. Truly mind-numbing!

Magnum XL-200 is a step down from Millenium Force, but still has some serious WOW factor, along the lines of The Hulk at Islands of Adventure but without the launch start and that great Hulk sound.

Then, of course, there are the wooden coasters. Gemini is getting a bit dated, but is still a great ride, along the lines of Gwazi at Busch Gardens. Mean Streak is much bigger, but in all honesty it's a brain-rattler. Really shakes your foundations. I'm not a fan of head-smashing when I ride a coaster, so this isn't my favourite.

Add in a handfull of smaller coasters, some fairground rides, shows and tons of garbage-food, and you've got Cedar Point, all with that great view of Lake Erie.

Go if you can. It's a coaster fan's heaven!

You won't regeret it, Mr. Orlando.

Hersheypark isn't too far away, and also has some decent coasters. Nothing like Cedar Point, but a Cedar Point/Hersheypark/Busch Gardens Williamsburg/Six Flags trip would make a really nice split-stay trip. Lots of driving (or a few short flights), but if you like coasters the mid-west has plenty, and they are world-class.

The Mid-West is the general term for the huge upper mid-section of the USA, from the Dakotas in the west through to Ohio further east, and encompassing Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan (where our second home is). It is a vast plains region of the US, producing a lot of the country's grain but with only a fraction of the population of other states (i.e. they can be pretty empty!).

It is a fascinating part of the country but it is mind-numbingly cold in the winter (we can go for months at a time with sub-zero temperatures!! ). The temp peaked at 32F today, which is the highest it's been for weeks. Thank goodness we can get to Florida in 2 hrs!

And I can whole-heartedly endorse Susan's recommendation for Cedar Point. It is a truly stunning park in ride terms, and has no equal for the number of out-and-out thrill rides. Top Thrill Dragster is quite an amazing experience (but over in about 20 seconds!!), while Millennium Force is an absolute beast of a coaster. Can't wait for Maverick to open this season!

Cedar Point is only about an hour from both Cleveland and Detroit, hence not too far from US gateway airports, and it can easily be combined with trips to Pennsylvania and Virginia for the other parks Susan mentioned. Well worth considering :)

(Six Flags Magic Mountain in LA is a good point of comparison BTW; Cedar Point has the edge though for the sheer number of rides, and for the extreme ones!)

I can thoroughly recommend it. It is the only way you can really get a feel for the vastness and amazing variety of this country. We sometimes drive from Michigan down to Florida (about 17 hours, if you don't stop for anything more than petrol!), and it makes for a great view of states like Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia. It may even start another book or two :D
