I flew into the States 3 times last year. Twice with BMI & 0nce with Virgin . Both from Manchester.
The BMI flights were to Washington & Chicargo , Virgin was direct to MCO.
I found the BMI flights far superior in every way to flying Virgin. Although BMI do not fly direct like Virgin the planes were newer ( Airbus A320 / Ancient Boeing 747 ) had more leg room , the headrest screens all worked & the cabin crew were polite , efficient & friendly. Virgin plane was older than i am :)
offered less legroom , the headrest dvd system was useless , the food less palatable . Also the rugby scrum at MCO for my car rental was non-existant when stepping off a domestic connection from the eastern seaboard. The only advantage Virgin had was the direct flight saving approx 3 hrs on the total journey time. As for cost my flights were cheaper with BMI than Virgin buit i'm sure this is not always the case.
Check in at Manchester is the same for all Transatlantis flights , little extra security but no big deal. The fun bit is the immagration in the USA with the finger printing & photo's . Makes the waiting time a little bit longer .
Enjoy your holiday the journey might be long but the destination makes it worth it :) :)
