Hi All.
We all went to Orlando in 2005, and are going again in April 2007. My tip is: If you are going in the hotter months, drinking a lot is absolutely essential, and their tap water tastes funny. You can buy bottled water quite cheaply from all the supermarkets, but carrying it around can be a problem. One solution is to get either a water “bladder” to put in your rucksack such as the “Big Zip 1.8 ltr (Platypus)” see http://www.cheaptents.com/acatalog/Product_Catalogue_Products_62.html
although Aldi were doing the combined rucksack and bladder recently. These are great, easy to carry and you can sip throughout the day, plus fill it up the evening before and put the bladder in the fridge or even freezer, the platypus range is freezer proof.
Try to get at least one pair of walkie talkies if you plan on separating at all. I like to go on the big rides, so at some point in the day would hop off to have a thrill ride, and meet up later. Also if you loose a family member in the crowd (he speaks from experience!!!) co-ordinating the search is again much easier, and once found, you can quickly let your wife know and to stop fretting. Using your UK mobile in the States is very expensive, walkie talkies are great and free to use and the kids love em too! You can get more powerful ones out there from the local supermarket; however these are not supposed to be used back in the UK.
We booked an in-expensive hotel room on I-Drive with Thomson’s, then upgraded to a family suite, direct with the hotel. This meant two bedrooms, much more practical and it cost $20 a night, in my opinion worth it.
If you have a satnav such as “TomTom”, think about purchasing a USA South East map addition, either as a separate card, or download. Navigating can be stressful in a foreign country, and a friendly voice navigating for you (apart form the wife!) is very reassuring. I have just purchased this as a download for my TomTom 700 for £33. I drive 30,000 miles a year here in the UK, but this was the most stressful part of the holiday for me last year.
Carl.
