I don't actually know anything about Oktoberfest so by rights I shouldn't be posting here. I just had to say, I had a good freind who went to Oktoberfest once and had the funniest stories to tell (sad, really, but funny none the less!) about how drunk they got on German beer (being used to the American version, which is really pretty awful, isn't it?).

They were inspired to ride The Slide, a huge wooden contraption set up in the middle of the main drinking area. Seems it required climibing about a hundred steps to get to the top, then 'riders' slid down to the bottom of The Slide, at which time they were unceremoniously thrown off the end only to land in a crumpled, broken heap on the floor at the bottom. Since everyone was sloppy drunk only a few people actually broke bones.

According to my friend, it was at that time they noticed NONE of the Germans were riding The Slide. Seems it was great entertainment for the locals to watch stupid, blind-drunk Americans doing something that was obviously going to break their ever-lovin' necks.

I was horrified and fascinated at the same time, so I applaud you for your bravery in wanting to visit during Oktoberfest, Mr. O.

Perhaps I'll join you.....but I'm only having a sip!! :D

Again this isn't particularly about Octoberfest (sorry) but another story about the time a few years back when we weren't going to Orlando and wanted a theme park fix so went to Germany for a few days and went to Warner Bros Movie world. Walking around the park we noticed something strange.... the Germans never laugh on their rides, they rarely scream or smile almost Robotlike. After being used to excited and noisy Americans (sorry Susan!) it was very very odd and we have never gone back!!!!!

I honestly don't know anything at all about Oktoberfest, other than the story I mentioned, so I'm worthless on that count. We do have a small German town in Michigan that has a big Oktoberfest celebration every year, but I'm going to bet money it's MUCH more conservative than the Real Thing. Most people would probably have 2 beers (maybe 3 if they're really feeling frisky!) whereas the person I know who went to the real Oktoberfest probably threw back 2 per hour for several hours!

It does sound like fun though! Do you think you're really going? I'd love to hear about it if you do!

I went to Oktoberfest a few years ago and actually did come back with a pair of lederhosen. Needless to say they haven't come out of the wardrobe since :)
