OK, in honour of new member IamBollo, (who posted an excellent response on Mr orlando's Oktoberfest thread!), here's a thought for today:

What purchase have you made on a foreign holiday that "seemed like a good idea at the time," only for you to get it home and think, 'Why did I buy that??!' Are there any hidden embarrassments that lurk in your cupboard? Do tell all!!! :D

For my part, I must have bought several dozen bottles of local beverages (like Slivovitz in Austria) which I thought tasted good at the time, but which turned out to be just about undrinkable back home! Yeecch!!!

I bought a coffee mug at Leeds castle, as a gift for my father. I was pretty shocked at the price....$22!!...but figured I was on holiday and he'd really like the mug (which had pictures of all the castle's landscaping; he's a Master Gardener, so he'd appreciate it).

It was only when I got my credit card bill that I rememebered the price was in GBP, not US dollars. I was horrified to think I'd just spent $44 on a coffee mug!

I also tipped a masseuse about $40, again forgetting I was paying in GBP. Guess I'm a slow learner. I should have realised something was amiss when she came out and thanked me profusely.

Back in 1992 Disney were selling a dog lead with a muzzle type end that when you held the handle was stiff. You could then walk around looking like you had an invisible dog. Looked really good as everyone walked around the parks, so like sheep we bought one.

Got home, lead went in the loft and never came out again. :o :o
