We have 3 kids, 2 boys and a girl, eldest boy is 11, youngest 2.5 and wee lass is 6. Nintendo DS's solve the eldest 2 sets of entertainment, anybody have any suggestions for entertaining a very determined , lively tasmanian whirlwind 2 1/2 year old? Last Year on the return flight He screamed the plane down from getting on until He ran out of steam just before take off! and fell asleep leaving my wife and I nervous wrecks! not to mention putting the fear of god into those nearby! (any one on the 5hr delayed take off MYT flight 5/5/06 might remember, Apologies and hope you have recovered!)

A dose of Calpol? :D

Seriously though, there is very little you can do when the little ones decide to scream. I do know Mums who give their child a dose of Benedryl (cough syrup here in the US that makes you sleepy) for flights, upon their pediatrician's recommendation. It eases some of the pressure on their ears as well (and some of the pressure on Mum and Dad's nerves!).

Sweets, favourite distractions, seat-back TVs....but in the end, if they're going to be inconsolable, there's little you can do.

I'm sure you'll get much better replies than mine. I really just wanted to say I adore the term 'wee lass'. That's just the cutest thing ever!

It's the Jockanese blood in me Susan!

Well, I think it's just the most charming thing. :) Simon had to tell me what Jockanese means, I'm ashamed to say!

I would love to travel up your way some time, scudsuchet. I have a picture in my mind of a place I am convinced is in Scotland, and I'd love to track it down. I have a feeling it's on the Eastern coast, up high, in a hilly area.

But enough of that. Back to what can be done for the babies......!!

Don't you just give them a drop of malt in their milk up north, scudsuchet?!

The old malt was a favourite on my dummy when I was wee!
Unfortunately Susan I now live in the north east of England, but used to live in a place we call the gateway to the Highlands! that should paint a picture! My wife is English, but we all have our crosses to bear! (only joking!) :D

Oh my goodness.....!!! We have my family over today and I just read your first line to them ('The old malt was a favourite on my dummy when I was wee!') and it took us a full 5 minutes to figure out what it meant!

"Soaking a pacifier in whiskey was the preferred method of soothing children when I was little", right? :D

I do love the language, my friend. It's so picturesque and lovely and delightful!

But back to what can be done for the babies on flights.....................!!!

Ha! Ha! yes the dialect is a tad confusing!
Anyway Should you and Simon wish to travel to Scotland I recommend my Travel Book,
'A Scot's guide to Jock's in Frocks' 2007. It has broken all it's previous sales records of ....1, (purchased by a Hamish Mctavish on the island of Barra who thought it was clothing catalogue!) :D

Hi there,
We're going next month with our 2, who are 11 and 33 mos. My eldest is sorted, PSP & seat back TV, but like you I thought "help" with my youngest!

What I have done is gone to a party shop (on ebay) and bought loads of little "disposable" toys such as party snakes, playdoh, plastercine, stickers, stickers stickers (!), some books, etc etc. I'm going to cheaply wrap those items, (18 of them!) and let him have one appx every half hour. It may work...........!

Other than that, like Susan said, meds may work, although when my eldest was little we went on a 4hr flight, and tried medised (recommended by Dr!) and he went the opposite way, all hyper! Might be worth a dummy run first ;)

When do you go?

Hth!

Sarah
24 days to go :)

Hi Hereford family!
We fly out on 31st of this month, not long! I love the idea of giving the wee fella a new item to play with every 1/2 hr! Definately gonna try that! He has never had a dummy, he just refused it from the word go! So I use it instead in moments of stress! :D Tried Yoga but got stuck in 32" pitch seat! Had to sit wedged in the lotus position for 9hrs! Took 3 security guys to get me out at Sanford!! :D :D
Glad I tickled your sense of humour Karrie! ;)

We took a two year old last year we took colouring books and pencils and books to read and we made sure that she was quite tired so she would have a sleep. We also walked around the plane a few times so we didn't feel closed in.
