View Full Version : Dublin Hotels?

Can anyone suggest a good, clean, quiet hotel/accommodation in Dublin? We now have 2 nights there instead of one, with plans to stay in Dublin itself and see the 'touristy' stuff. My searches have all resulted in hotels that are either hideously expensive or the reviews are not so great. I'm having trouble finding a good middle-ground.
I am most concerned about it being in a good (family-friendly) area and I'm picky about cleanliness. Surely there must be such a place, and hopefully not at the 'special rate' I found at one place (135 Euro PER PERSON! That's not a 'special', considering the level of hotel it is).

We have all the official contacts for the Dublin tourist board, but, as ever, it is definitely more helpful to have personal recommendations. As we have probably all found, some of these websites can make even the most ordinary hotel sound like The Ritz, and we'd rather have the honest, unvarnished truth :D

If you wouldn't mind asking, KillerPenguin, that would be terrific. We are very familiar with the tourist sites and booking engines, but prefer reviews from people we 'know'. I have read several sites I like (Trip Advisor, etc) but would be most grateful for suggestions from people here. :)

Trip Advisor - never rely on what that tells you.
If I beleived the stuff it said about the Stratsphere Hotel In Vegas i would have changed hotels - I didnt change and had a great time- hotel was perfect.

I guess it's all in how you read it. I've found it to be quite accurate, but you have to weed out the 'overly-glowing' report and the 'never-stay-there-even-if-your-life-depends-on-it' report, and look for the balanced reviews, just as you would anywhere. You can stay in a 5-star hotel and have a lousy time, you can stay in a dump and have a great time...that's why lots of opinions matter and you can't take one or two reviews and think you know what you're getting.
We like a variety of opinions, which is why I am asking here. :)

the gresham hotel is a good hotel i've stayed here once & i have to say i had a very pleasurable stay...i have just checked the hotels direct website to check their prices & their rooms are going from £59 pppn which would be approx 90euro each B&B.
this hotel is fantastic as it is on o'connell st, the main thoroughfare of dublin & transport of all sorts are at your disposal.

I would be grateful for your help, jacqui! :)
We're going in July (GASP! Had to change dates and that's the only time available) with my 14 year old son, hoping to stay in the city centre but not against staying just outside if there is safe, convenient public transport. We are there from very early morning through to mid-day the next day, so not a lot of time, unfortunately!
Being in a 'good' area matters a lot to me, but we are also hoping not to pay $200-300 a night for it.
I have looked at Mespil hotels, Jury's Inn Christchurch, Jury's Custom House and Bewleys hotels. All of them except Jury's Custom House looked reasonable. Would you agree? Are there better choices/locations for the price (roughly $150-ish per night)?
I really appreciate any suggestions or insights you can give me. We have a final night there on our way back and would probably stay near the airport, if that helps.
Editing to say, we must have been posting at the same time! I just now noticed your recommendation for the Gresham hotel. Will definitely look at that one! Thanks!!

I Have stayed regularly in a chain called O Callagahans in dublin
There headline rate always looks truly awful but they are a small chain who pride themselves on there quality
They normally do an internet special and have good locations on Grafton Street at St Stephens Green and Meerion Square which is in the better part of the city centre but within easy walking distance to everything and very safe.
My best mate moved there 2 years ago to be with his lovely fiancee and we visit regularly due to cheap flights available from Glasgow.Due to the small ness of there flat in dublin there is no room for us to stay and they always book us an O'Callaghans
I hope this helps Dublin is fantastic

Thanks, buddyelvis! With the helpful replies here we're starting to get an idea of what we can expect to pay, and where we should be, so that's really useful!
Liked the look for the Gresham, now off to look at O Callaghans!
