liquids in hand luggage

i sometimes what planet some people come from,on our recent trip back from Maui we had to change aircraft in LA we had to pass through TSA checks as i walked through the arch the TSA official asked if a bag was mine i said that it was not and it was claimed by an american lady in front.The tone off the TSA lady changed and the lady was asked to step back from the table hands behind her back!great thats all you need it turned out she had got 3 bottles of wine in this bag and then in her other bag several bottles of water !After several words the TSA agreed to let her go back and check them in to hold luggage which under the circumstances i thought was pretty reasonable . But how can 2 normal looking people be so stupid to even think they could get through with it there are enough signs up and have been for some time now it beggars belief.

Hi, i'm not defending the lady, but she could have purchased the drinks 'airside' on the first leg of your journey. I have done this when travelling from Heathrow to Las Vegas via Chicago. I drink masses on flights as I de-hydrate quickly, so always buy drinks once i've cleared security, for the journey, but saying this, I discard any bottles left before going back thru security, for the onward flight.
This makes sense to me, but not all people are logical or think about it!!
Just as an after thought, if you had puchased duty free at Maui, and carried these onboard, what would the procedure have been there, when you changed flights?

didnt go through duty free at maui as it classed as internal flight no duty free until los angeles in departure lounge they then hold your duty free for you and you are given it as you enter the aircraft in sealed bag.These bottles of wine were just shop brought outside the airport.I do agree its tough with the water as you do get thirsty on long haul but they do provide unlimited water if you need it it just a sign of the times really

Does any one know if hand creams and face creams count as liqiud for the flight to usa.
I took face cream to Finland at Christmas with no problem. but America is a different kettle of fish.

You can take up to 100ml of creams and stuff in a small sandwich bag. I'm not sure whether that's 100ml total, or for each item.

Check your airline's information page of exact sizes allowed, but yes, you can.

I take small bottles of face cream, hand sanitizer, etc (maybe 4 or 5 little bottles) in a clear 1 gallon baggie and that's always been fine. :)

Any kind of cream, paste or gel counts as liquid. This even includes lipsticks. You can take them in the hand luggage provided they are in a 1 liter clear sealable bag (zip loc bags) and each individual product does not exceed a 100ml/100g size. As long as the back is sealed, you can take it.

Ah, well it's easy to get confused - when I check Virgin's site, it gives the various airport's individual requirements.

I was really peeved, after my lips felt like they were on fire because I couldn't have my lip salve with me in 2006 to discover on the flight back that a lip salve 'lipstick' counts as a solid and I could have had it after all!

So you're saying a standard lipstick counts as a liquid? It would be nice if they could make up their minds, wouldn't it!

I suppose a lot of it boils down to the individual doing the screening, but we have been advised by the airports we are flying from (Gatwick, Manchester, Heathrow, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow) that lipsticks and lip balm as well as mascara, eyeliner, etc does count as liquid and has to go into the zip loc bag.

In feb when we flew from manchester my lipstick was not counted as liquid! It was in my hand luggage bag. I didn't have to put it in a plastic bag!

Lipstick, lipsalve, small jars/bottles are all acceptable as long as they are under 100mls each and all in the one clear 1 litre bag within your hand luggage.
My lips would be a right mess without my lipsalve as the air on the flights is just so drying.
Some aiports require you to remove the bag from your hand luggage and place thru the scanner seperately and others don't :confused:.
Just wish there were one set of guidelines that all airports operated too, so us the humble traveller knew where we stood anywhere in the country/world
