Hi,

Just wondering, if we purchase a Nintendo ds or Sony psp whist we are in florida, will they work in the UK? My mum really wants one for the Brain training and Sight training games (yes..shes a cool mum;)) and i wouldnt mind a psp for the flight home.

Thanks.

I think they they only work with american games. They are a bit like american Dvds and have region codes on them. You would probably be ok if you bought a few games while over there, and I suppose you could always order any games you want on the internet once you were back home.

Hi k and s
We bought a sony psp in 2005 for my son you have to buy
an adapter so you can charge it in this country which you can purchase
at most electrical stores in one of the malls
as for games these are all multi region but you can only play
usa version films.
hope this helps.

Our friend bought a psp in feb this year and he's had no problems. He did get an adapter to use in this country and has since bought games in the uk.
The ds's are the same you just need an adapter.
The DS lite games are much cheaper in america and we try to stock up for birthdays and christmas while we are there. You pay $ what we pay in £ :happy-thumb.

Hi,

American and UK games will work in an American bought psp. Only American bought movies will work though. I bought a PSP in the US, months before it was released in the Uk and I've never had any bother with it.:happy-thumb

All American hand-held game systems will work in the UK, as long as you get the necessary adapter to charge them with back home. They are definitely worth buying as you will save a fair bit of dosh!

Thanks for the help everyone!

Oh, are the adapters easy to find? and how much(ish) are they?
Thanks.

Along the same lines - does anybody know if you need a special adapter, other than the standard plug socket adapter, to be able to charge up Nintendo DS from the UK when we're in Florida?

no you don't, we took ours back in march and the uk charger works fine with the plug adapter on.

Thanks for that Mortus - I wasn't sure & didn't really want to frazzle the DS by plugging it in where we shouldn't!!

Just asked my son who is a computer games designer and he says that US PS3 games will work in our PS3 consoles but not PS2 US games.

No you're right Richard the US blue ray films won't work over here.
Not sure about US Wii games, will ask son about them when I speak to him but have a feeling that they won't work in our Wii consoles.

Well I can't really take the credit as I know very little about games, but my son has been into computer games since he was about 6 years old. He has kept that interest all throughout childhood and even studied all aspects of computer gaming and programming at University. Now he works in the games industry as a designer so I guess all the studying at Uni has paid off!:happy-thumb

Thanks for that catlady!!! A great tip. My daughter loves her wii and was hoping to buy some games in florida when we go in July. :happy-thumb

Dont buy one from the camera exchange near the Ponderosa on Hway 192 around mile marker 6. We got ripped off and I wish I had thought of trying Wal Mart where PSPs are $200 rather than the 265 I paid.

heads up on buying a DS in the US

one of our party had saved up and wanted to buy a ds whilst in florida (we was there last week in feb, first week in march) in the US they do different colour DS' which you can't buy back here in UK, red and blue if memory serves me right.

now we searched around at all the usual places, walmart/target even specialist gaming stores and could not get any of the red/blue DS'. walmart at the time didn't have any DS' at all in any of there kissimmee stores. target only had a couple of the pink ones and nothing else. lastly the specialist gaming stores we went to told us that nintendo just weren't shipping enough of the units out (a bit like the Wii here last xmas and the one before that too).

as luck would have it i came upon a limited edition gold DS in a music store at premium outlets which our junior member bought (paid through the nose for it as well IMO, walmart red /blue ds $140 - gold ds $225) but she was happy enough with it.

now the situation may have changed in the last 6 weeks since we was there, if so :happy-thumb but it may of not :tut-tut:

Thanx catlady when i saw your post on the Wii for playing USA wii games i was on it like a shot. I have bought from there before and had my sons PS2 console Chipped with the DMS3 chip and it now does everything and plays all region movies and games.
I certainly would recomment Divineo for such things - well done and thax for saving us ££££s we go in June and (all 8 of us to a villa ) so will be hitting Wall-Mart for Wii games.

Ok, please excuse the fact that I'm not very clever when it comes to adapters or anything to do with voltages, I can only just about change a fuse.

I am starting to panic a bit. My son decided he wanted to buy a new DSi in Orlando, which we did. I bought a US to UK adapter for when we brought it home (not very expensive only $4.99 from one of those little gift shops and carries no information). You guessed, we've now plugged it all in and the DS light flickers and then goes out. Please, someone, somewhere tell me this isn't the end ..............

I anxiously await your replies

Catlady

Spoken to my son who says you need a UK plug for the DS from somewhere like Game. It could be the difference in our voltage (240v) to the US voltage (110v) may have fried the US adaptor. Worth a try.

Susan Veness

You need a convertor as well, if there isn't one built into the system. This always confuses me too, but an adaptor just adapts the plug to the plug point. A converter is what converts 240 (220? not sure which!) to 110 (UK to US) voltage.

Can't tell you how many curling irons I've fried forgetting to plug in the converter first, then the adaptor.

Thanks for your quick reply Catlady but I'm still confused. Would a UK charger fit the US console though? Sorry if I sound really stupid. I'm looking at the back of the actual adapter fit console and it says 4.6v in. Now I'm comparing it to his UK DS lite (which I suppose i shouldn't because it's a completely different model) and that says 5.2v in. Also the sockets on the consoles for the charger are different in size.

Veronica

Sorry Susan, didn't realise you'd posted in between. So ....er......where might I get one of these converter thingies?????

Catlady
14-06-2009, 08:01 PM
Hubby seems to think Maplins may do a converter?
Son has a DS lite not the new one and he just bought a plug adaptor from Game which steps down the power to DC voltage.

Veronica

Thanks Catlady, can I assume that your son's DS lite was bought in the US? If so I'll just go to Game. Sam already had the DS lite but wanted the newer upgraded version with built in camera etc.

You can't trade in the american DS games in the shop Game.
