Hi Everyone,
My darling wife surprised me yesterday and said she had booked us a holiday to Gran Bahia Principe Mayan Riviera Mexico next year. It is somewhere i have wanted to go to and was wondering if anyone else had been to this resort rather than Cancun.
Steve.

Can't say I know this area at all, but the general reviews seem pretty positive:

Only went down that way on trips to Tulum and Xha, both fantastic and in my opinion a better beach than Cancun.
The Mexican people are fantastic and more than anything else made the holiday

We did Tulum too, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely people, wonderful atmosphere, great history. :happy-thumb
I'm not a fan of the more touristy places; getting away from the 'party zone' is a real treat and a fantastic view into the Real Mexico.

Sorry Mrs Veness, but how do you equate that to Orlando/WDW the tourist capital of the world?

HAW HAW HAW!!! Good point!
Ok, let me amend that. I'm not a fan of the touristy places IN MEXICO, but found the jungley bits delightful. :D

Steve - the Mayan Riviera is beautiful and not commercial at all like Cancun. We have stayed in resort called Playacar twice and would have no hesitations in going back. If possible go to the park Xel-ha it is fantastic - you pay one price and everything is included (it is a natural ecological park).
You will need to go Cancun at least once to see the difference and do hubbys favorite excursion - driving a 2 seater speedboat through the mangroves. (attached photo).http://links.pictures.aol.com/pic/7be0OxgELD*WyOfVJuRfNStckFG9Yd4fBFf1v4xQp5Fd3Ig=_l .jpg
We also spent a day shopping in Cancun and this is us near the bay (look at the colour of the sea)!!http://links.pictures.aol.com/pic/7be0OxgELD*WyOfVJuRfNStckDOFbtyfuC55v4xQp5Fd3Ig=_l .jpg
If you want anymore info let me know?

I have been to both Cancun and Riviera Maya. Both were very different experiences and I am glad I tried them both!
Cancun was very busy and excellent for night life and a varied amount of day trips. Jungle tour, which is the speedboats through the mangroves, catamaran, Chichen Itza, and most definitely Isla Mujeres, the beach is amazing!
Riviera Maya was very laid back and relaxed. They too had the jungle tour, horse riding, rain forest tour and also a bullfight( please remember they do kill the bull!)
As always though, your holiday is what you make it! :happy-smi
