View Full Version : Will the seats be roomy enough?

I'm 5'10, and my wife is 6' tall. A friend who has just returned says that we may have a bit of a problem with the legroom with Virgin Economy, as although he fitted fine, he is quite short.
We can't really afford to upgrade to PE, so does anyone tall-ish on here have any words of advice or wisdom?

We travelled Virgin economy in June 2007. My husband is 6'5", we didn't have extra legroom and he was ok. Not the comfiest he's ever been but bearable! I'm only 5'5" and would still only call it bearable!!!
At least its only for 7 hours and you get all the fun of Florida at the end!!! :happy-thumb

Check your flight details (I.E type of aircraft) and then look on
Seat Guru. This site gives you details of all the best and worse seats on most aircraft.
I have posted link to the Virgin aircraft page. I think you will be in a 747 - 400 version 2 if going from Gatwick
http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Virgin_Atlantic_Airways/Virgin_Atlantic_Airways_Boeing_747-400_2.php
You may decide to look at best seats and try to pre book or at least know when you check in what you want. If you cant pre book then go early for twighlight check in.
Good luck

If you're tall, you can either try and get the front row (23) which gives you extra legroom, or you can book the rows by the doors - but that'll cost you extra!
It's the width I have issues with as much as anything else!

and me.... do you think it's time the airlines took note!!! I for one would pay for an extra few inches on the width though the leg room doesn't bother me.

... and don't get me started on the impossibility of using an armrest fold-out lap tray when you're not skinny!! I'm top heavy too, so I was extremely uncomfortable trying to eat and also see what I was doing!

I have to use one of the kids trays next to me if i want to breathe and eat at the same time:o:o Just about managed in premier on first choice last year but that was the first (and last) time:o:o

I agree look on seat guru and book in advance. or try to get the exit row or an isle seat. Martin is 6'4 and hates economy but PE is so much more expensive. Hope this helps and I hope you dont get they guy Martin had going to California that took up half of Martin's seat, TV and coughed and spluttered over everything.

To be honest, it I was unlucky enough to sit next to someone like that, I would have to have a polite word with them. 7 Hours stuck with that kind of rudeness would not be pleasent!
I am going to try to get a row of 3 near the window. We have a 7 year old (who will then be 9) so the exit row will be a no-goer, but I will try and get my wife in the Isle seat, and I will be happy near the window or in the middle!

we have always sat in PE travelling to Florida as the monarch plane from Newcastle is naff! but we won't be able to afford it next year so we will have to fly economy for the first time. Cannot persuade my DH to travel and fly from a different airport to save money and better planes, he insists we go from Newcastle.

Go from Manchester, its just as easy honestly.
I live all of 20 mins away from newcatle and yes, going from manchester with Virgin was cheaper for us. ok we then ended up staying overnight but that made things even easier.
A stop on the way there and back to top up on caffine and i was fine driving, infact it was rather nice.
As much as I like newcastle, manchester is just that much more well better !!

when we went last year we asked for the exit aile seats, they were only £50 each, each way but if you ask for the one next to the window they dont charge you for that one as the door is in front but you can still strech your legs out but make sure you get there early as you cant book these in advance. i will be doing this again in 3 1/2 weeks time and counting:purplejum:purplejum:purplejum

Last year on virgin we were given the 3 exits seats so we asked for them on the return journey but wast told it was $75 dollars extra on the return journey

Ahh, but being given them is not the same as specifically requesting them. If you specifically request them, you have to pay extra. You may have been given those seats last time because you were just lucky enough that that was all they had left in a run of 3.
But who can possibly second guess these airlines!!!

That's very true. These days airlines try to squeeze a few extra dollars out of everyone for lots of things like this. So, yes, if you request the seats, there will often be a charge. But, if no-one requests the seats, they are just allocated late in the check-in process and the lucky few people get them without any extra payment.
