    Lightbulb Florida Weather Report

It is probably worth starting a regular chart of the weather, so newcomers and regulars alike can get an idea of prevailing conditions, and get a feel for weather history (as the thread builds up over time).

Starting with summer 2011, here's how things have shaped up so far:

June - surprisingly dry and warm without being TOO hot for much of the month. Then we arrived on June 24 and the weather went haywire for 8 days!! Very wet weather for that period, albeit still not as hot and humid as we might expect (around 89/90F). Some of the wet weather was quite prolonged (4 hours or more) and we had several flash-flooding incidents around town.

We then had 5 completely dry days, with no rain to speak of at all and temps pushing around 90F (but still without the high humidity we normally get). Then it's back to unsettled, rainy stuff for the past 3 days; we had more than 5 inches of rain on Thur and Fri (thankfully, it didn't stop the Shuttle launch on Friday) with temps in the upper 80s, and today is now shaping up as a typical summer day - hot and humid with the distinct possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm.

Today's week-ahead forecast suggests we're going to start getting REALLY hot next week (with temps in the mid 90sF) and with more of the humidity which makes it feel even hotter. That would get us back to 'normal' for Florida in July - but we'll wait and see as 'normal' isn't a concept the weather usually sticks to for long!

As a quick side-note, June-Nov are officially 'Hurricane season' in this part of the world, and Central Florida did experience 3 hurricanes in 2004. That was a 100-year anomaly, though, and we do not normally get any significant impact from these big tropical storms that usually threaten the Caribbean and Gulf Coasts more than here. This year is forecast to be 'above average' for storms, so we'll wait to see what happens in August and September (usually the busiest months for storms).

Five days later and the forecast for this week was pretty accurate - getting hotter all the time, with periodic but short downpours. The temps are now hovering around 94/95F which, with the humidity, puts the heat index (the temp it actually feels like) at around 102/103F. We've had a short, sharp shower 3 of the 5 days, dumping up to 3.5 inches at a time ( ) and causing localised flash flooding (the corner of Apopka Vineland Rd and Winter Garden Vineland Rd in the Crossroads area of Lake Buena Vista was under water during one thunderstorm on Tuesday!), which is all pretty much par for the course at this time of year.

It is so hot you can feel your hair and eyeballs sweating after a while, and getting into the air-conditioning every now and then is absolutely essential. You can hear unprotected skin frying during the hottest parts of the day!

With the main UK summer holiday season about to start, it all serves to underline how important it is to wear high-factor suncreams at all times and drink LOTS of water (or Gatorade). The parks remain great fun, but NOT if you get sunstroke or sunburn.

    Be ready, people!!

Really, really heavy storm yesterday (Fri), from around 4pm right through to almost 8. It covered almost all of Central Florida and dumped around 5 inches of rain in the process, with a LOT of lightning! These big storms seem to be around one a week at the moment; with around a 50% chance of a thundery shower (less than an hour) otherwise. It's amazing to think there is a drought just a few hours north in Georgia (and to the west), but much of the country is experiencing a heatwave at the moment. We're just getting most of the moisture!!

Almost as soon as you think there's a pattern to the weather, it changes. Since the last post, things have been pretty much hot and dry, without a hint of rain, and not so much of the usual humidity. Temps have been hitting 92/93F at peak times during the day and it certainly FEELS hot, but the lack of any rain is definitely a surprise for the past 5 days.

Today's forecast is calling for an 80% chance of thunderstorms around 4pm (which would be normal) but, so far, the weather radar is showing hardly a cloud!! We'll see, though, as things can change pretty fast here!

OK, this is now getting silly. We've had 10 straight days of hot, sunny weather with virtually no rain (less than half an inch during that period, on two separate days - we can have that much in half an hour normally!), and there is still nothing on the weather radar for today (there was rain to the north and west but nothing in Orlando). I don't know if it is saving it all up to drown the poor tourists who come in August ( ) but everyone here now is certainly getting good value for their visit! It's around 93/94F at its hottest (it was 81F at 7am this morning!!) but with much lower humidity than usual. Just hot, dry and sunny!!

OK, just catching up on this topic. May finished with a surprisingly wet burst and was the first month since last October to reach the average monthly rainfall (3.5in, in this case). All that rain arrived in just 3 short bursts, from the 7th-9th, 14th-16th and 27th-31st, so you can see it tends to be concentrated, heavy rain for short periods. The end of the month was also pretty hot, consistently at or around 91F (33C), which also gave rise to a hot start to June (although around the expected average temps).

This month has bucked the 'average' trend in many respects, though, with a sustained heavy rainfall for the last 4-5 days, providing over 4in (90mm) of rain in that short period. This is due to 2 big low pressure systems which have taken up residence just off the west coast and dragged lots of humid air through Florida. There is heavy overcast and more heavy rain in the forecast for the next few days, with slightly lower-than-average temps (although still pretty warm at around 85F or 28C). Next week should see things return to a 'proper' summer pattern, with the usual temps in the 90sF and punctuated by periodic thunderstorms that soon clear.

PS: Just 3 weeks to the 'first anniversary' of this thread!!
