Default Disney's 12 Announcements of Christmas

So you can fault them for being a bit contrived, but Disney is unveiling a '12 Announcements' of Christmas, starting today, with more news about forthcoming new attractions in their parks in WDW, and beyond. The first one concerns new developments at Downtown Disney over at Disneyland in California:

Lots of exciting changes are arriving at Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort in early 2018! With new dining and entertainment experiences, here’s a peek at what to expect at the beginning of next year.

The new, groundbreaking hyper-reality experience, Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire by ILMxLAB and The VOID, will transport guests deep into the Star Wars universe, walking freely and untethered throughout the multisensory experience with friends and family. In groups of four, teams will go undercover as stormtroopers to capture Imperial intelligence vital to the budding rebellion’s survival. Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire will open on January 5, 2018. Tickets available now at TheVOID.com.

Splitsville Luxury Lanes is a dynamic recreation destination offering a unique combination of dining, drinks, bowling and entertainment. The Downtown Disney District location will feature 20 bowling lanes interspersed throughout the location, four dining areas (indoors and out), more than 25 flat screen TVs, and the ability to host both live performers and DJs. Splitsville will open in early 2018.

Also, D-Street will close on January 2 and reopen in early 2018 as a reimagined retail space that offers Disney fans a variety of Disney-themed home goods. Guests will find a curated assortment of products that will change with each season. Not to worry, most of the unique items found at D-Street are available throughout the resort and shopDisney.com!

This is just the beginning! We’ll share details soon about other new and exciting experiences headed to Downtown Disney District in 2018.

Here's another - full details of all the changes coming to WDW's Caribbean Beach Resort, from the Disney Parks Blog:

Earlier this year, we shared that Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort at Walt Disney World would undergo some transformations. Today we are excited to share new colorful details about those enhancements debuting late this summer!

Old Port Royale at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort will be reimagined as the port of entry where guests will check in before embarking on their island vacation. This centralized location will offer resort guests more convenient access to services, amenities and dining, including an all-new Centertown Market for casual eats, an all-new Shutters restaurant offering waterfront dining adjacent to the new Banana Cabana outdoor bar and lounge, and Calypso Trading Post for shopping.

Centertown Market will be expanded and enclosed, creating a quick-service restaurant with an indoor street market vibe. Guests will enter the space under a large palapa-like structure, accented with glowing colored light pendants made from glass bottles. The market will feature open shutters, wooden light posts, awnings, ornamentation and unique seating areas. Guests will also have access to the Grab n’ Go market for a specialty coffee and quick bites.

Shutters, a Caribbean-inspired table-service restaurant, will be located on the waterfront of Old Port Royale, transporting guests to a beachfront home in the tropical islands. Large open shutters will allow the sun to cast a warm light into the space adorned with handmade items that appear as they’ve been found on the islands. Leaves and floral design motifs will fill the space, celebrating the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

A festive poolside bar, Banana Cabana will be a great place to gather for food and drinks, immersing guests into the fun and relaxation of island life. Cabana-style drapes will flank seating areas and re-purposed steel drums will illuminate a central communal table made from a wooden boat.

Forget something? No worries! With its history of being the port’s import and export facility, Calypso Trading Post will offer shoppers Disney merchandise and other vacation essentials.

And the latest changes to the Grand Californian Hotel in Disneyland:

Today, cast members at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at the Disneyland Resort celebrated the completion of the hotel-wide renovation. Guests can now enjoy completely redesigned guest rooms plus a refreshed lobby, pool area and concierge-level lounge! To commemorate the occasion, an emblematic orange tree was presented to the hotel’s cast. The orange tree motif can be found throughout the hotel’s new design!

As part of the most extensive refurbishment since the hotel’s 2001 opening, the renovation brings an even more upscale experience to the hotel, while staying true to its signature Arts & Crafts design style.

Here's another good one about WDW - more details of the transformation of the former Portobello restaurant into the new Terralina, for early 2018, from the Disney Parks blog:

Earlier this year, the Levy Restaurant group debuted Paddlefish, a seafood-centric signature restaurant located in the heart of Disney Springs. Soon, they will unveil their newest venue: Terralina Crafted Italian, expected to transport guests to “la dolce vita,” (the sweet life) essence of the spectacular Lake District of Northern Italy.

I recently had the chance to connect with Alison Weber, Chief Creative Officer for Levy, and she shared some new details with me about the inspiration behind the location. “The story here is of a first-generation Italian family, from the Lake District, who built a home in Disney Springs, expanding it over the years to welcome more friends and neighbors to enjoy their hospitality, and, of course, food! At Terralina Crafted Italian, every detail supports the philosophy that ‘life is meant to be savored through the simplest of pleasures.’ The table is even set that way … ready for good conversations, storytelling and moments to be enjoyed.”

Featuring an open rotunda that welcomes guests with a rustic stone fireplace, a new outdoor patio with a veranda bar that spills out into the Disney Springs promenade, and a two-story glass conservatory that showcases stunning views of Lake Buena Vista, every element of the décor feels fresh and new. My favorite touches? The herb garden outside the front doors, giving a nod to the medley of flavors that are waiting to be discovered inside and the curated collection of family photos and vintage heirlooms that are scattered throughout the space. I can’t wait for my first visit!

Based on everything I’ve heard, I’m already envisioning carefree evenings relaxing with friends, a nice glass of wine in hand and a sampling of Northern Italy’s best spread out before us. James Beard-Award Winning Chef Tony Mantuano will lead menu development and I expect he’ll have some serious culinary delights planned for the wood-burning oven and open kitchen on display in the location.

The restaurant will open in early 2018 and details on the menu are expected soon. Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog, where, in the coming weeks, you’ll hear more about the dishes and drinks planned for Terralina Crafted Italian.

And the big announcement (should it have it's own thread? ) is that Disney is buying Rupert Murdochs 21st century Fox entertainment assets for £52bn which includes a 39% stake in SKY TV. It's gonna take a while to read through all the stuff coming out but it seems to be a big piece of news coming out of Disney.

Yes, it's pretty much the hot news topic of the day. Usually, big mergers like this aren't good for the consumer, but we will have to wait and see. It certainly gives Disney a LOT of new content, as well as a major distribution channel(s). Hopefully, it will lead to more investment in the parks, but I'm not holding my breath!

I note they also get the Simpsons

Not sure whether that has any implications for Universal studios considering they have just spent millions on the upgrade over by the Simpsons ride. I'm sure there will be loads more info coming out over this in the coming days, weeks and months.

And another ride to close is Stitchs Great Escape which apparently is closing in early 2018. It is rumoured yet another VR ride will take it's place which i really hope not as we seem to becoming overloaded with visual rides rather than ACTUAL rides.

Agreed, Superspur. I'd like to see something real. Virtual reality is nice in small doses, but surely Disney can be more creative than that.

I'm looking forward to the new Terralina. We were big fans of Portobello, which had a few truly spectacular dishes, so it will be interesting to see what a fresh look and a fresh menu will bring. I'm pretty sure Attractions Magazine will want a review when it opens, so we'll be excited to check it all out!
