Default Orlando Airport Traffic Hit Record Levels In 2017

Good job they're building that new South Terminal...!

ORLANDO, Feb 6.- The latest passenger numbers find the Orlando International Airport was the busiest in Florida in 2017.

The airport had a 6.41 percent annual growth, with 2.7 million new passengers. That beat its annual record with a total of 44.6 million passengers.

Phil Brown, Greater Orlando Aviation Authority CEO, said a strong central Florida economy, with theme park expansion and a growing University of Central Florida helped lure passengers to the airport. Weve already started construction on 16 additional gates to accommodate this growth at the airport. But were concerned that when we open that up we may run out of capacity. Because the growth that were starting to plan ahead to be able to deliver some additional capacity if needed, Brown said.

Brown added that the airport generates 31 billion dollars annually in revenue for the regional economy.

They are very impressive figures, but perhaps it is right to worry were that growth may lead.

Always a double edged sword I guess more visitors could lead to longer lines and busier parks. Our trip last year we was held on the aircraft for nearly an hour due to the immigration hall being full

This is our concern too that Immigration seems to take a lot longer these days even with the automated kiosks as you still need to see a person after. There may be some visitors put off by the long wait and if you haven't been to Orlando before it isn't a good impression.

Yes, it is definitely a challenge for the airport, but they are aware of it and hope to smooth things out this year, especially for the busy summer period. We will be watching with interest.

Took us 2 hours to get through immigration last September. We could see our cases going round and round on the carousel.

Knowing you and Mrs PG the fact you could see your cases was a bonus 👍

And they're already breaking records in 2018, too, with a new high for the first quarter:

Domestic traffic up 7%, and international arrivals up 13.5% over 1st Q of 2017.

Overall, traffic was up 7.76%, at 12,041,616 passengers, on course for a year of 45.5 million!

    March alone at 4.46 million.

Much of the traffic came from new routes, including MCO-Amsterdam (Delta), MCO-Richmond (Sprit) and MCO-Belfast (Virgin). Load factors are also at a healthy 88%.

That all means that the airport badly needs to new biometrics system for speeding up immigration arrivals, and the new South Terminal can't open soon enough!

PS: We'll be visiting the airport to get the very latest news on all the immigration/new terminal development later this month.

And here are the full stats:

ORLANDO, FL. – Thanks in part to 309,000 additional seats coming into Orlando International Airport in March, the first quarter of 2018 is another one for the record books. Domestic passenger traffic is up almost 7 percent while international traffic has climbed approximately 13.5 percent over the same time last year, bringing the total number of travelers on a 12-month rolling total to nearly 45.5 million.

With traffic up and growing across the board, the timing is perfect for completion of the current North Terminal Complex renovations project. Designed to enhance space, comfort and ease of travel for passengers at Orlando International Airport, the project is scheduled for substantial completion by mid-late summer.

New service for March 2018 included Delta to Amsterdam, Netherlands 7 days a week; JetBlue to Atlanta 7 days a week; Spirit to Richmond 7 days a week; and Virgin Atlantic to Belfast, Northern Ireland 2 days a week. Along with more seats coming into the market, the planes were full with load factors also up to 88 percent.

    March 2018 Statistical Data:

In March domestic traffic rose 6.33 percent with 3,902,733 total passengers
International traffic climbed 12.17 percent in March with 563,958 passengers
Overall traffic was up 7.03 percent with 4,466,691 total travelers for the month
    1st Quarter 2018 Statistical Data:

International traffic jumped 13.44 percent with a total of 1,546,676 passengers
Domestic passenger volume increased 6.97 percent with 10,494,940 total travelers at MCO
Overall passenger traffic was up 7.76 percent with 12,041,616 total passengers

Rolling 12-month total traffic after the first quarter is up 7.43 percent with 45,478,825 passengers
