Thumbs up Disney donates 1m US dollars to Hurricane Michael relief fund

From Travel Mole this morning. I've been critical of Disney over a number of things to do with charges and theme park plans, but hats off and a big round of applause for this generous donation.

Walt Disney Co is giving $1 million in aid to help communities battered by Hurricane Michael get back on their feet.

The US Government has declared a major disaster after the Category 4 storm, which struck last week.

The donation will go toward disaster response and recovery via the Florida Disaster Fund, which is overseen by the Volunteer Florida Foundation.

It is the official private state fund which was set up to assist Florida communities during natural disasters.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said: "The families and communities impacted by this devastating hurricane need our help as they begin to rebuild. Through today's $1 million contribution, and other relief efforts in the weeks and months ahead, we will stand with our Gulf Coast neighbours."

Disney employees are being encouraged to contribute and the company will match funds raised internally dollar for dollar.

Florida Governor Rick Scott said: "We are extremely thankful for Walt Disney Company's support of the Florida Disaster Fund. This funding will support disaster response and go directly towards relief efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Michael."

On Friday, TravelMole reported Scott described how Hurricane Michael left 'unimaginable destruction' along Florida's coastline, leaving many hotels damaged.

It is such a shame there is all that damage as it is a beautiful part of Florida.

Disney does a lot of good in the community that's somewhat overlooked. Very happy to see they've made this big donation. Mexico Beach is all but gone, with whole neighborhoods literally washed away. We're watching for an opportunity to go up and help with Habitat for Humanity once things straighten out and building can begin again.

Yes, this is really good to see from Disney, and they are not alone in making a significant donation to an area that is going to need extensive rebuilding for months, if not years, to come.
