    Default The Gran Destino Tower

This new, 16-storey tower-block section of Disney's Coronado Springs Resort is now open, and we are just back from the big media preview, which showcased pretty much all the main features, as well as the dining. It will be the subject of this week's ATD blog, but suffice it to say we found it extremely quality-conscious (more so than most Disney Moderate resorts), with a few minor quibbles, and with a VERY high focus on the food and beverage options.

Watch this space, as they say!

Here are 2 quick photos to whet your appetite:

It has definitely lived up to the concept art and I'm seriously impressed. I can't imagine we'll stay, but the fact that it's got no less than FOUR stunning new restaurant/bar/lounge options makes it a destination option regardless.

We're not sure exactly when the blog will go online (hopefully tomorrow!), but, for those who can't wait, Attractions magazine has a section devoted to the new Tower on their weekly show. Here's the link, and Gran Destino is featured from 6:14 to 12:52:

Without doubt it looks and sounds like a nice hotel, but I can't help but think it is in the wrong place and seems to spoil the look of the rest of the resort.

There is no question it's a massive, massive hotel. It's shocking to see when you first pull up, especially if you're used to Coronado Springs as it once was. This thing is a behemoth! It absolutely dominates the resort.

That said, I'd be interested in hearing your take when/if you see it in person. When we were doing interviews at Three Bridges, we were looking at the tower and I actually quite liked the way it looked against the lake. Without a view of the rest of the resort buildings, it really is very pretty, and very elegant. It does take some mental gymnastics to remember it's a Disney hotel, though.

We saw it a few times in May as we drove past and I was taken aback at how big it was. It just seemed incongruous in that location, especially when you consider how important in the past that Disney has been with the vistas it creates.

That's a fair point. They have also had to basically re-backstory the whole resort, from one of Spanish colonial expeditions, to a more general sense of travel and adventure. It's a bit of a shame, evgen if the extra amenity the new Tower adds is pretty sharp.
