Our guide to Rome Pizza Food Walking Tour

This fantastic food tour is centered in Rione Monti, an off-the-beaten-track district rich in historical monuments and considered the prettiest, most characteristic district of Rome.

It is a hidden gem standing between Venice Square, The Forums and the Colosseum and has an amazing medieval setting through a maze of lanes and alleys with many small, family-run shops, restaurants and bars to explore.

The first stop is at a hundred year-old bakery where you will be introduced to 'pizza alla teglia' which is cooked in a special baking tin. You will also learn three different ways of making Italian pizza and their relation with history.

Make your way to another local delicatessen or Gastronomia as a local would say and learn about the ingredients used on variations like capricciosa (made with mushrooms, artichokes, ham and olives), and discover how the toppings are added at different stages of the cooking process. Sample mozzarella cheese, cold cuts of meat and pickled vegetables, washed down with a citrus-flavoured soft drink called chinotto.

Next, work your way further into the Monti neighbourhood and stop in another family-owned bakery to sample 'pizza alla pala', a pizza cooked on flint rock rather than the usual tin surface. Continue your stroll, stopping at a family-run wine bar for an aperitivo (pre-dinner drink with snacks), and then pose for photos by the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore one of Italys largest churches.

Before your tour takes you to the Colosseum, your last food stop is at the best Sicilian Gelateria in the city where you will taste a typical Italian dessert.  Your tour will then move on to The Colosseum where you will skip-the-line to make the most of your time at this Roman monument.  Admire the incredible engineering genius of the Romans and hear about the incredible speed at which they were able to build.  At the end of the tour, you will receive a ticket to access the Roman Forum and the Palarine Hill valid to us 48 hours after your tour.

Departure Location: Tour departs from Via di Sant’Eufemia #15, Rome, very close to the Imperial Forum and Piazza Venezia.

Departs: Daily, except Sundays, November - March. Monday, Wednesday & Saturday April - October. Please note: the tour does not operate during August.

Duration: Around 3 hours.

Start Times: 10.00am.
